Congress Bags Historic Win In Telangana, Brings Down KCR's 10-Year-Old Empire

The BRS, which won 88 seats in 2018, has seen its vote share and seat tally plummet, losing ground to the Congress and its allies in most parts of the state.

In a surprising overturn, the Congress party emerged as the clear winner in the Telangana assembly elections, ousting the Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by K Chandrashekar Rao's 10-year reign. According to the latest trends, the Congress, which had forged a pre-poll coalition with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), has gained a comfortable majority in the 119-member assembly.

The tallies of the parties stand as follows:

  • Congress: 64
  • BRS: 39
  • BJP: 8
  • AIMIM: 7
  • CPI: 1

The BRS, which won 88 seats in 2018, has seen its vote share and seat tally plummet, losing ground to the Congress and its allies in most parts of the state. The BJP, which had planned to make advances in the state, has also fared poorly, holding only a few seats.

Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy basking in the glory of the victory of Congress in the Assembly elections held a roadshow to the party headquarters in Hyderabad.

Several supporters gathered around his vehicle and cheered him throughout the journey.

Praising Revanth Reddy's performance in Telangana, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that the Congress will decide on the state's CM face. Until recently, Revanth Reddy has been regarded as the Congress party's undeclared CM face.

"The people of Telangana have decided that there must be change, there must be change for progress, and development. He (Revanth Reddy) is the PCC president. He is the team leader. Our party will take the decision (on the CM's face). The election was fought on collective leadership. I do not want to comment on KCR or KTR, the people of Telangana have given them an answer." he stated.

'CM-CM' shouts were raised by Congress workers in support of state party president Revanth Reddy when he arrived at the party office in Hyderabad.

Following a landslide victory in Karnataka, Congress' guarantees in Telangana have proven to be game changers for the party in India's youngest state.

The guarantees extended to a wide range of voters, from women and farmers to students and martyrs' families, and included cash transfers, pension programmes, free energy, cylinders, and land. The 'Mahalakshmi', 'Rythu Bharosa', 'Gruha Jyothi', 'Indiramma Indlu', 'Yuva Vikasam', and 'Cheyutha' assurances are among them.

The election has seen intense campaigns by major personalities including as Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi during the last two months.  In all, 2,500 candidates ran in the elections.
