Bypolls 2023: Voting Concludes In 6 States, 72% Polling In Kerala, Over 55% In Uttarakhand
Over 49 percent of the voters in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi assembly constituency voted in the bypoll on Tuesday till 5 p.m.
The by-polls for seven assembly constituencies in six states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, and Jharkhand was held today. The by-elections are important since they come before the state assembly elections later this year and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. In Tripura, by-elections were held for two constituencies: Boxanagar and Dhanpur. Following the death of Oommen Chandy, the Puthuppally seat in Kerala became vacant. Furthermore, the Ghosi seat in Uttar Pradesh was vacant when Dara Singh Chauhan, a Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA and notable OBC leader, resigned and rejoined the BJP.
Over 49% Voter Turnout Till 5 PM In UP's Ghosi Assembly Bypoll
Over 49 percent of the voters in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi assembly constituency voted in the bypoll on Tuesday till 5 p.m., the state's first electoral showdown since the establishment of the opposition INDIA alliance.
The Akhilesh Yadav-led party has accused the Election Commission of misusing government machinery during the bypoll. It was claimed that Muslim voters were being denied the right to vote in several areas.
The state chief electoral officer's office reported that 49.42 percent of ballots had been cast as of 5:00 p.m.
Arvind Singh, a member of the SP's national leadership, has written to the CEC, stating that the polling officer is not allowing Muslim voters in booth 147 to vote.
72.91% Voter Turnout Recorded In Kerala's Puthuppally Assembly Bypoll
The voting in the by-election for the Puthuppally assembly constituency in Kerala's Kottayam district finished on Tuesday evening, with around 72.91 percent of the over 1.76 lakh voters participating.
The quick speed of voting witnessed in the first half of the day, with turnout over 50% by 2 p.m., decreased subsequently, with the following 4-5 hours of polling only seeing a further 22.91 percent turnout.
After the polls closed, 1,28,624 voters -- 64,084 males, 64,538 women, and two transgenders -- cast ballots out of a total of 1,76,417.
Over 55% Voter Turnout Recorded In Uttarakhand's Bageshwar Assembly Bypoll
More than 55% of the voters voted on Tuesday to decide the destiny of five candidates in the Bageshwar assembly bypoll in Uttarakhand. According to Anuradha Paul, the Bageshwar District Magistrate, 55.44 percent of voters participated in the bypoll. She stated that voter turnout for the seat in the 2022 assembly elections was 60.01 percent. The votes will be counted on September 8, and the results will be announced the following day.
Voters who were in wait at the polling booths at 5 p.m., the polling station's closing hour, were permitted to vote, according to the DM. Polling was quiet, with no untoward incidents recorded, she said, adding that an EVM machine at the Mandal Sera polling station fell out of service at 2 p.m. and was swiftly replaced. The constituency has around 1.2 lakh voters. People began waiting outside polling booths in considerable numbers, including women, as early as 6 a.m.
64.84% Voter Turnout Recorded In Jharkhand 's Dumri Assembly Bypoll
According to an Election Commission official, 64.84 percent of 2.98 lakh voters cast ballots in the by-election to the Dumri assembly seat in Jharkhand on Tuesday.
The polling percentage was marginally lower than in 2019, when 69.74% of the electorate voted. "The election passed off peacefully across 199 polling booths in Giridih and 174 booths in Bokaro district. No report of violence or law and order situation was reported from anywhere," Giridih district election officer Naman Priyesh Lakra informed PTI.
The voting took place in 373 polling sites, 200 of which were recognised as Maoist-affected areas. According to the election authority, the Jharkhand Armed Police and the CRPF were deployed to guarantee peaceful voting.
76% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 3 PM In Tripura Assembly Bypoll
An official reported that till 3 p.m. on Tuesday, an average voter participation of 76% was registered in the by-elections to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Tripura's Sepahijala district.
Voting began at 7 a.m. in 59 Dhanpur assembly constituency booths and 51 Boxanagar assembly constituency booths, and was slated to go until 4 p.m.
Six people were reportedly attacked by locals in Mohanbhog, Dhanpur Assembly constituency, according to police.
75.82% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 5 pm In Bengal's Dhupguri Bypoll
According to an Election Commission official, over 76% of the 2.6 lakh eligible voters cast ballots in the by-election to the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district until 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
All of the booths are manned by central paramilitary troops, and voting will continue until 6:30 p.m., he added.
