By-election Results 2022 HIGHLIGHTS: Welcome to ABP Live as we bring to you detailed coverage of the high-voltage byelection results 2022. Byelections in six assembly districts across five states and the well-known Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, where the Samajwadi Party and the BJP are engaged in a power struggle, will see votes counted today.
Results for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur and Khatauli, Odisha's Padampur, Rajasthan's Sardarshahar, Bihar's Kurhani, and Chhattisgarh's Bhanupratappur will be announced on December 8, the same day that the votes for the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be counted.
In Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri seat, where Mulayam Singh Yadav, the patriarch of the Samajwadi Party, passed away in October, and in Rampur Sadar, where senior SP leader Azam Khan was disqualified, there was a high-stakes contest.
Dimple Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav's older daughter-in-law and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's wife, is the SP candidate in Mainpuri, a Yadav family pocket borough. Raghuraj Singh Shakya, Mulayam's brother Shivpal Singh Yadav's former confidant, is the BJP candidate.
After Akhilesh Yadav's defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections early this year and the BJP's loss of Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha seats in June bypolls, a victory for SP could provide some consolation.
In the event that the Congress and the BSP do not participate in the byelections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP, Samajwadi Party, and its ally, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), would face off directly in each of the three locations.
In April 2019, the Assembly Speaker disqualified Rampur MLA Azam Khan after he was found guilty and given a three-year prison sentence in a hate speech case against him.
Khan, known as the "Muslim face" of the SP and out on bail after being held in jail for more than two years in various cases, sought votes for Asim Raja, citing the alleged injustice the BJP government had done to him. Monday saw a low turnout for the seat.
The Congress held Sardarshahar and Bhanupratappur, while the BJP won Khatauli and the SP held Rampur. Kurhani was held by the RJD, while Padampur belonged to the BJD.
The central and state governments won't be affected by the by-election results because the ruling parties have a large majority.
The BJP is fielding Rajkumari Saini in Khatauli, which was a hotbed of the Muzaffarnagar riots in western Uttar Pradesh in 2013.
She is Vikram Singh Saini's wife, and he was kicked out of the assembly after being found guilty and given a two-year prison sentence by a district court in a riots case in 2013.
Madan Bhaiya, a RLD candidate and a four-term MLA, won his last election almost 15 years ago. After that, he lost three assembly elections in a row from Loni in Ghaziabad in 2012, 2017 and 2022.
The Sardarshahar seat in Rajasthan was held by Congress MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma (77) who died on October 9 after a delayed sickness. Anil Kumar, the late Sharma's son, is running for Congress, while Ashok Kumar, a former MLA, is running for the BJP.
The passing of BJD legislator Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha forced a byelection to fill the Padampur seat in Odisha.
The BJD launched an aggressive campaign for the December 5 byelection for its nominee Barsha Singh Bariha, the older daughter of MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha, whose death necessitated the byelection. This came after the party suffered its first defeat in a by-election since 2009.
Due to the death of Congress MLA and deputy speaker of the Assembly Manoj Singh Mandavi last month, the by-election to the reserved Scheduled Tribes seat of Bhanupratappur in Maoist-hit Kanker was necessary.
Savitri Mandavi, the deceased MLA's wife, has been chosen by the Congress, while Brahmanand Netam, a former MLA, is the BJP's choice.
If JD(U) candidate Manoj Singh Kushwaha, a former MLA, wins the Kurhani assembly segment in Bihar, it will strengthen Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's position, while a loss could empower his critics.
The JD(U) is running for the seat where RJD MLA Anil Kumar Sahani's disqualification forced a by-election.
