Protests Erupt Over Denied Tickets in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, discontent simmers within both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress camp as protests intensify among leaders who were denied Assembly poll tickets and their supporters. Such protests have been a recurring sight, witnessed on both Sunday and Monday. Madhya Pradesh is scheduled to hold Assembly polls on November 17, with the vote count slated for December 3.
Former state health minister Rustam Singh, who was denied a ticket from Morena, resigned from the BJP on Monday and subsequently joined the Bahujan Samaj Party. Singh's son has been fielded by the BSP from the same constituency. Allegations of age-based discrimination emerged, with sources close to the 78-year-old Singh claiming he was denied a ticket based on his age, despite the BJP nominating 76-year-old former minister Jayant Malaiya from Damoh.
Further protests erupted as Congress activists from Shujalpur in Shajapur demonstrated outside the residence of state unit chief Kamal Nath. They sought a ticket for Yogendra Singh, alias Bunty Bana, from Shujalpur, instead of the party's official nominee, Ramveer Singh Sikarwar. Notably, this marks the second protest in three days by Congress workers in Bhopal against Sikarwar's nomination.
