There Are Other Aftab-Shraddha Too, Need Strict Law Against 'Love Jihad': Assam CM Himanta Sarma

The Assam CM said only BJP was capable of bringing a stringent law on forced religious conversions and asked the people to bring the party back to power for a record seventh term.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said India needed a strict law against 'love jihad' or forced religious conversion while referring to the gruesome murder of Shraddha Walkar by her partner Aftab in Delhi, ANI reported. Sarma said only BJP was capable of bringing a stringent law on forced religious conversions and asked the people to bring the party back to power for a record seventh term.

Addressing a gathering in Dhansura in Gujarat, which is going to polls next month, Sarma said, "Aftab killed Shraddha and chopped her body into 35 pieces. When police asked why he brought only Hindu girls, he said he did it because they are emotional. There are other Aftab-Shraddha too. The country needs strict law against 'love jihad'."

"Love Jihad" is a term used by right-wing outfits to refer to religious conversions allegedly through force or deceit.

Aftab allegedly strangled Shraddha Walkar in May and chopped her body into 35 pieces. He kept the pieces in a 300-litre fridge for almost a month at his residence in south Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days.

During the probe, it came to the fore that Aftab befriended girls on social media and invited them to his house when he would be alone. Police said that he had made multiple accounts on dating platforms using different SIM cards. Police said Aftab befriended 15-20 girls, most of whom had come to his house.

Sarma had also made the same remark while campaigning for the municipal polls in Delhi last week. Sarma had said as the country had a law against triple talaq, "we need a law against love jihad and also for a common civil code".

Gujarat votes on December 1 and 5 for a new government. The results will be declared on December 8.
