Background

Varanasi: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, PM Narendra Modi from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won the elections by a margin of 371784 votes. The polling / voting in Varanasi constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 7 on 19 May. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s PM Narendra Modi and Samajwadi Party#s Shalini Yadav

Varanasi 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 71 out of the 80 parliamentary seat with 42.3 percent vote share while the Samajwadi Party managed to win just 5 seats with a 22.2 percent vote share.

Out of the 42 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi, 40 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of PM Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janta Party as he defeated Arvind Kejriwal by a margin of 371784 votes.

  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate by a margin of 57436 votes INC candidate Dr. Rajesh Kumar Mishra had got 206904 while BJP got Shankar Prasad Jaiswal votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 52859 votes BJP candidate Shankar Prasad Jaiswal had got 211955 while INC got Rajesh Kumar Mishra votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha poll, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJP candidate Shankar Prasad Jaiswal attained 277232 votes and CPM's Deena Nath Singh Yadav bagged 125286 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJP candidate Shankar Prasad Jaiswal attained 250991 votes and CPM's Raj Kishore bagged 150299 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defeated Communist Party of India candidate with a difference of 40439 votes. Here, Bharatiya Janta Party leader Sheesh Chandra Dixit attained 186333 votes and Communist Party of India candidate Raj Kishore bagged 145894 votes
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha poll, JD candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, JD candidate Anil Shastri attained 268196 votes and INC's Shyam Lal Yadav bagged 96593 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate by a margin of 94430 votes INC candidate Shyam Lal Yadava had got 153076 while CPI got Udal votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated JNPS) candidate with a difference of 24735 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Kamalapati attained 129063 votes and JNPS) candidate Raj Narain bagged 104328 votes
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha poll, BLD candidate defated INC candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BLD candidate Chandra Shekher attained 233194 votes and INC's Raja Ram bagged 61340 votes.
