Background

Nilgiris: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Gopalakrishnan, C. from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) won the elections by a margin of 104940 votes. The polling / voting in Nilgiris constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 2 on 18 April. The major contest is between All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam#s M. Thiyagarajan and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam#s A Raja

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 37 out of the 39 parliamentary seat with 44.3 percent vote share while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just 1 seats with a 5.5 percent vote share.

  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defeated Indian National Congress candidate with a difference of 23959 votes. Here, Bharatiya Janta Party leader Mathan, M. (Alias) Master Mathan, M. attained 369828 votes and Indian National Congress candidate Prabhu, R. bagged 345869 votes
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate had defeated TMC(M) candidate by a margin of 60385 votes BJP candidate Mathan M. Alias Master Mathan M. had got 322818 while TMC(M) got Balasubramoniyan S.R. votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, TMC(M) candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, TMC(M) candidate Balasubramaniyan S.R. attained 475515 votes and INC's R.Prabhu bagged 194139 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Prabhu R. attained 387707 votes and DMK's Doraisamy S. bagged 206905 votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Prabhu, R. attained 455411 votes and DMK's Mahalingam, S.A. bagged 281640 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate R.Prabhu attained 341824 votes and DMK's C.T. Dhandapani bagged 209885 votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated JNP candidate by a margin of 85743 votes INC(I) candidate Prabhu R. had got 273614 while JNP got Thippiah T.T.S. votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, ADK candidate had defeated NCO candidate by a margin of 59346 votes ADK candidate Ramalingam P.S. had got 241777 while NCO got Nanja Gowder M.K. votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate had defeated NCO candidate by a margin of 61094 votes DMK candidate J. Matha Gowder had got 215654 while NCO got Akkamma Devi votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, SWA candidate defeated INC candidate with a difference of 19702 votes. Here, SWA leader M. K. N. Gowder attained 167712 votes and INC candidate A. Devi bagged 148010 votes
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated CPI candidate by a margin of 88121 votes INC candidate Akkamma Devi had got 163420 while CPI got M. E. Madhanan votes.
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated IND candidate by a margin of 65634 votes INC candidate P. S. Bharathi had got 122388 while IND got P. S. Bharathi votes.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi will file his nomination on April 10, from Amethi for the Lok Sabha election, while UPA chief Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination from Raebareli on April 11; Priyanka Gandhi is also expected to join them, sources revealed on Thursday.
