Tamil Nadu Rain: Chennai Schools To Be Closed On Nov 15 As Heavy Downpour Leads To Waterlogged Streets

In the wake of heavy rainfall leading to waterlogging in streets, the Chennai district administration has announced all schools in the district to observe a holiday on November 15.

Amid heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and other parts of Tamil Nadu, the Chennai district administration has declared for all schools in the district on November 15. The order to close schools all schools in Chennai district comes form Chennai's District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, as Tamil Nadu's capital witnesses waterlogging in several parts of the city amid severe downpour. With the Northeast Monsoon spurring low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal, several parts of Tamil Nadu have been battling with heavy rainfall since the past few days. Earlier, the intense rainfall at isolated places across the state also triggered authorities to close down schools in several districts of Tamil Nadu. The incessant rain that battered the districts, forced the authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Cuddalore districts.

Taking to X, IMD said, "A Low Pressure Area formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adj. Andaman & Nicobar Islands at 0530 hrs IST and lay over the same region at 0830 hrs IST today. Likely to move west-northwards and intensify into a Depression over West-Central Bay of Bengal on 15th November." Thereafter, it would move northwestwards and may intensify into a Deep Depression over West Central Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast on 16th November. Subsequently, it would recurve north-northeastwards and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast on 17th November," it said.

Earlier last week, the weather department predicted that a low-pressure area might form around November 15. A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over Southeast & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal around 15th November, 2023,” the IMD said. The IMD has also indicated a potential increase in rainfall, due to the low-pressurbearea expected to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.
