Delhi SI On Patrol Duty Mowed Down By Speeding Car In Pandav Nagar, Search Underway For Driver

A police team was conducting a routine check when a sedan hit the SI and the driver of a pick-up truck. The pick-up driver is undergoing treatment in Delhi.

A Delhi Police officer was run over by a speeding car in the city’s Pandav Nagar area on Tuesday morning. A civilian was injured in the incident. Sub-inspector Gangasaran was on patrolling duty with Assistant Sub-Inspector Ajay Tomar in an Emergency Response Vehicle, with the latter at the wheel. The two stopped a pick-up truck for checking around 5:30 AM. Gangasaran came out of their vehicle as did the pick-up truck driver.

As Gangasaran had stepped out of the vehicle, both the pick-up truck driver and Ramgopal were rammed by a speeding sedan on National Highway 9. The car was travelling from the Ghaziabad side and was going towards Sarai Kale Khan.

"SI Gangasaran came out of the police vehicle, while ASI Tomar remained inside. The driver also came out of the vehicle," the cops were quoted as saying by ANI, adding that "During checking, a speeding Honda Amaze on the way from Ghaziabad to Sarai Kale Khan, hit the SI and the driver."

Acting swiftly, Tomar, with the help the driver's helper, took Gangasaran and Ramgopal to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where the cop succumbed to his injuries during treatment. He is survived by his wife and five children.

The truck driver Ramgopal, who is a resident of Delhi's Nangloi, was sent to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.

According to PTI, the spot has been inspected by a crime team and a case under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC was registered, police was reported as saying by PTI.

An investigation has been launched to identify the car and the driver. Deputy police commissioner (East) Amrutha Guguloth was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times that the police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death and injury.
