Arvinder Singh Lovely Appointed New Chief Of Delhi Congress

Arvinder Singh Lovely was appointed as new chief of Congress party's Delhi unit.

Arvinder Singh Lovely has been appointed as the new chief of the Congress party's Delhi unit replacing Anil Chaudhary. Continuing the organisational rejig in state units, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Lovely. The four-time MLA was a key minister in the Sheila Dixit cabinet holding important portfolios such as Urban Development & Revenue ministry, Education, and Transport. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the East Delhi constituency against Bharatiya Janata Party's Gautam Gambhir and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi but lost.

"We will take everyone along with us and work towards strengthening the party. We will also raise the voice of the people of Delhi," he said after being appointed as the Congress Delhi unit chief.

Pn the performance of the party, he said "It is true that the performance of Congress has not been good in the last few years, but seeing the atmosphere in Delhi and the country today, people are looking towards Rahul Gandhi. The people of Delhi are facing a 'double maar'. The people of Delhi and the country are missing Congress. We will strengthen our organisation and continue to raise issues of people. I see a bright future for Congress in Delhi. The decision (on alliance with AAP in Delhi) will be taken by the party high command."

Lovely was actively involved in student politics during his college years.

In 1990, the Congress leader was elected as the general secretary of the Delhi Youth Congress and then served as the General Secretary of the National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) from 1992 to 1996.

In 2017, he briefly broke his association with the party and joined rival BJP. But after a few months, he returned to the Congress stating he was an ‘ideological misfit’ in the BJP.

Chaudhary congratulated Lovely as he passed on the baton. "Hearty congratulations and best wishes to elder brother @ArvinderLovely
ji, former MLA from Gandhi Nagar and minister in Delhi Government, on being appointed as the President of Delhi Congress by the top leadership," Chaudhury posted on X.

According to a statement issued by All India Congress Committee general secretary-in-charge KC Venugopal, the party appreciated the contribution of the outgoing Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief  Anil Chaudhary.
