Major Negligence In UP Hospital: Man Who Consumed Poison Given Coal Syrup For Treatment
When questioned by local media, Dr Deepak Kumar defended the use of coal slurry, claiming it could be beneficial.

A shocking case of medical negligence has surfaced from the Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the alarming state of government healthcare services. A man who had consumed poison was brought to the district hospital, but due to the unavailability of activated charcoal, a standard treatment for poisoning, the doctors reportedly gave him a slurry made from regular coal instead.
The patient, identified as Mangal Prajapati from Gehra village in the Kabrai police station area, had allegedly attempted suicide following a financial dispute with his wife. Initially, he tried to hang himself, but when that failed, he ingested a poisonous substance. His family rushed him to the district hospital for emergency treatment.
Man Given Coal Slurry Instead Of Activated Charcoal
In the absence of activated charcoal, Emergency Medical Officer Dr Deepak Kumar administered a mixture made from coal in an attempt to counteract the poison. As Mangal’s condition worsened, he was later referred to a higher medical centre.
The patient’s relatives expressed outrage over the treatment. Mahesh Prajapati, who accompanied the patient, questioned the hospital’s approach: “What kind of treatment is this? The doctor should have administered proper medication to reduce the impact of the poison. Instead, they gave him coal, putting his life in danger.” The family has demanded strict action against the responsible medical staff.
When questioned by local media, Dr Deepak Kumar defended the use of coal slurry, claiming it could be beneficial. However, Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Pawan Agrawal distanced himself from the incident, declining to comment directly.
Medical experts warn that while activated charcoal is an accepted method to remove toxins from the body, using regular coal is not only ineffective but potentially harmful. The lack of such essential emergency supplies in a major government hospital underscores the grave negligence in the state's public healthcare system.
