'Shakti' Scheme Row: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Clarifies 'No Proposal To Revisit Free Bus Travel For Women'

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed on Thursday that the government has no proposal to revisit the 'Shakti' scheme, which offers free bus travel to all women in the state. His clarification follows remarks from Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who had suggested a potential review after noting feedback from some women.

“There is no such proposal before the government," Siddaramaiah told reporters, as per PTI adding, "There is no situation for revisiting it at the government level. There is no such intention, no such proposal.”

Shivakumar’s comments reportedly stemmed from responses he received via tweets and emails, where some women expressed willingness to pay for travel. "Some women, maybe 5-10 percent, have honestly said they are ready to pay. Ramalinga Reddy [Transport Minister] and I will discuss it," he said. However, Shivakumar also praised KSRTC's dedication to public service over profit stating that Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) was not focused on making money but to do public service.

Addressing any confusion, Shivakumar stated that the BJP is attempting to create uncertainty over the scheme, emphasising that while a minority of employed women who receive transport allowances question the need for the free rides, there are no plans to alter or discontinue the scheme.

On Thursday, DK Shivakumar told ANI, "There is no confusion about the Shakti scheme. The BJP is creating confusion. Some individuals are employed and receive a transport allowance from their company, so they question why they need this scheme when they can afford it. However, there are no plans or proposals to drop any of the schemes."
