Fake Boyfriend, Fake Death, Fake Insta Handles — Catfishing Prank That Led To A Real Suicide In Satara

Satara news: A 24-year-old woman committed suicide after being deceived by her friend, who created a fake Instagram account pretending to be a man with whom she reportedly fell in love.

Satara News: In a shocking turn of events, a 24-year-old woman in Satara district committed suicide after allegedly being deceived by her friend who had created a fake Instagram account pretending to be a man interested in her. The woman friend has been arrested.

The deceased, whose name has not been disclosed, fell in love with a fictitious persona named "Manish", created by the accused friend. According to the police, the accused set up a fake Instagram account under the name of 'Manish' and sent a follow request to the victim, which she accepted. Over time, the two engaged in frequent conversations, and the victim developed strong feelings for the imaginary boy.

When the victim insisted on meeting Manish, the accused escalated the deception by allegedly creating another fake account, this time under the name of "Shivam Patil". Posing as Manish's father, "Shivam" told the victim that Manish had committed suicide. To substantiate the lie, the accused even sent fake pictures depicting Manish's supposed treatment and demise, the police said.

Believing the tragic news, the heartbroken victim hanged herself on June 12.

How The Case Was Cracked

Initially, an accidental death report (ADR) was filed at the Wathar police station. However, the situation took a significant turn when the victim's family discovered the chat history on her mobile phone.

The family immediately reported the findings to the police, prompting a detailed investigation. Cyber police and experts analysed the Instagram messages and other related data, and the investigation confirmed that the fake accounts were created by the victim's friend.

A police officer involved in the case said the accused girl created a fake Instagram account and manipulated the victim into believing in a fictional relationship. When the victim insisted on meeting, the accused concocted a story about Manish's death, leading the victim to take her own life.

The accused has been arrested, charged with causing emotional distress that led to suicide.
