Old Delhi Railway Station To Get New Name? CM Rekha Gupta Writes To Centre

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta has requested the Union Railway Minister to rename Old Delhi Railway Station. The historic station, established in 1864, is a vital transportation hub.

CM Rekha Gupta also appealed for the Railway Minister's “personal intervention” to expedite the proposal through the appropriate channels.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged the Centre to rename the iconic Old Delhi Railway Station as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station, calling it a tribute to a legendary figure revered for his commitment to non-violence, social justice, and economic reform.

In a letter dated June 19, addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Gupta emphasised the deep emotional and cultural resonance Maharaja Agrasen holds among Delhi residents. “Renaming the station… would serve as a fitting tribute to his enduring contributions and would deeply resonate with the sentiments of millions of Delhi residents who hold him in the highest esteem,” she wrote.

Highlighting Agrasen's historic influence, the Chief Minister noted that the ruler is remembered for his emphasis on egalitarianism, trade prosperity, and communal welfare, and that his followers continue to significantly shape Delhi's socio-economic landscape.

Gupta also appealed for the Railway Minister's “personal intervention” to expedite the proposal through the appropriate channels within the ministry.

Old Delhi Station: A Historic Landmark

Established in 1864, the Old Delhi Railway Station, also known as Delhi Junction, is one of the oldest railway hubs in the country. Located in the bustling Chandni Chowk area, the station's Red Fort-inspired design and historical significance make it a landmark in India’s railway heritage. With 18 platforms, including two built to host two 24-coach trains end-to-end, the station handles high passenger traffic daily and remains a critical link in the northern rail network.

If approved, the renaming would mark a symbolic shift, blending Delhi’s rich past with a tribute to one of its most respected historical figures.

However, there has been no response from the Railways on this matter yet. The Purani Dilli Railway Station is one of the most important stations in the capital.
