Aarti Performed For Victims Of Tibet, Nepal Earthquakes On First Day Of Maha Kumbh Mela

An aarti was held to honor the victims of the Tibet earthquake on the first day of Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.

An aarti was performed for the victims of the earthquake in Tibet and Nepal on the first day of Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Monday.

Around 126 people were killed and over 100 injured after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Tibet on January 7 with tremors felt in Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India.

Swami Chidanand Saraswati, President of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram, Rishikesh, said he prayed for the people who died and lost their houses in the earthquake, reported ANI.

"Today, I prayed on the bank of Sangam - for those people who suffered as many houses were destroyed and lives were lost in Tibet and Nepal due to a disastrous tragedy (earthquake)," he said.

"As Sant Morari Bapu has said, we all should help those 126 affected families - and we will be sending some financial help to all of them through ITBP. Those amounts and the money are just a symbol, a token - as India believes in 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'," the priest said.

"All of India is with them. The relation between India, China and Tibet continues to flourish and we continue to peacefully co-exist - today's aarti was dedicated to that cause as well..," he added.

The earthquake left a trail of destruction with over 1,000 houses destroyed. The epicentre of the quake was located in Shigatse, one the holiest cities of the region. Shigatse is the home to Panchen Lama, the second highest spiritual authority in Tibetan Buddhism after Dalai Lama.

The quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale according to the United States Geological Survey while the China Earthquake Network Centre recorded a magnitude of 6.8.

The 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela began on Monday as devotees gathered at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the 'Shahi Snan' on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima.

With a huge number of footfalls expected during the pilgrimage that takes place once every 12 years, stringent security measures have been put in place.

National Disaster Response Force and water police of Uttar Pradesh police have also been deployed at places to ensure the safety and security of devotees.
