Brian Lara At Suruchi Sangha, Sourav Ganguly In Behala — Kolkata Sees Packed Durga Puja Pandals Amid RG Kar Protest

Kolkata's Durga Puja festivities are in full swing, with massive crowds flocking to pandals across the city.

Kolkata: Durga Puja festivities have kicked off in full swing in Kolkata, with pandals across the city drawing massive crowds from Tritiya (Day Three of Devi Paksha) itself. From the iconic Santosh Mitra Square to popular venues like Suruchi Sangha and Sreebhumi, Kolkata is witnessing people gathering in droves to celebrate, creating the unique festival atmosphere that the city is known for.

Prominent personalities are also joining in the festivities. Cricket legend Brian Lara made an appearance at the Suruchi Sangha puja, while former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly inaugurated several pujas in Behala and Howrah.

This year’s festive season saw an early surge in pandal traffic from Mahalaya, marking the beginning of the Durga Puja period.

This year, the Santosh Mitra Square pandal has a striking spherical theme, featuring LED displays that project various artistic scenes, while the Durga idol stands out with a unique design. The pandal has incorporated elements of the ongoing doctors' protest demanding justice in the RG Kar rape-murder case, bringing together both celebration and social commentary.

The crowds could be seen at the pandal as late as 11 pm.

The southern areas of Kolkata have drawn equally large crowds. Brian Lara's visit to Suruchi Sangha, where he played the dhaak (traditional drum) and toured the pandal, was a major highlight for fans and devotees alike.

Sourav Ganguly inaugurated puja pandals in Behala and Howrah Sunday, adding to the day’s festive energy.

Meanwhile, Sreebhumi’s pandal, modelled on the architecture of South Indian temples, has been attracting visitors since Mahalaya. Long lines can be seen outside the pandal with people eager to see the grand structure.

Meanwhile, RG Kar Protest Continues

The celebratory spirit has, however, not deterred the ongoing protests demanding justice in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case. Activists are on a hunger strike at Dharmatala, calling for swift action and justice for the victim. The strike gained further attention Sunday after activist Aniket Mahato joined the movement. Protestors have raised concerns about police non-cooperation, claiming obstacles in setting up essential bio-toilets for those participating in the hunger strike.

Support for the cause continues to grow, with hundreds of people joining the demonstration each day.
