In 1st Big Move, Omar Abdullah Announces Ending 'VIP Culture': 'No Green Corridor, Traffic Stoppage For CM'

Omar Abdullah said he instructed the DG of J&K Police to minimise public inconvenience and the use of sirens. He also urged his cabinet colleagues to follow the same.

In a significant move, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday asked the Director General of Police of the Union Territory not to create a 'green corridor' or traffic stoppage for his convoy.

The newly sworn-in Chief Minister said he instructed the DG of J&K Police to minimise public inconvenience and the use of sirens. He also urged his cabinet colleagues to follow the same.

"I have spoken to the DG @JmuKmrPolice that there is to be no “green corridor” or traffic stoppage when I move anywhere by road. I have instructed him to minimise public inconvenience & the use of sirens is to be minimal. The use of any stick waving or aggressive gestures is to be totally avoided. I’m asking my cabinet colleagues to follow the same example. In everything our conduct must be people friendly. We are here to serve the people & not to inconvenience them," Omar Abdullah said in a post on X, shortly after he took oath as the Chief Minister.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah took oath as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, heading the first elected government in the Union territory since 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated.

He picked Surinder Choudhary as his deputy. Choudhary, a former member of the PDP and the BJP who emerged a giant killer after defeating BJP's J-K president Ravinder Raina from Nowshera by 7,819 votes.

Together, the NC and the Congress have a strength of 48, a majority in the 95-member assembly -- five members are to be nominated by the LG.
