Large-Scale Bulldozer Action In Ahmedabad, Authorities Raze Illegal Bangladeshi Settlement

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation demolished illegal Bangladeshi settlements near Chandola Lake today, as part of an anti-encroachment drive.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in Gujarat launched a large-scale operation against illegal constructions on Tuesday, April 29. As part of this operation, the AMC demolished illegal settlements near Chandola Lake. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sharad Singhal, stated that a majority of Bangladeshi nationals resided in the Chandola Lake area.

Ahmedabad police had recently identified over 100 Bangladeshis residing illegally in the Chandola area. On Tuesday, the AMC undertook anti-encroachment action against these Bangladeshi settlements and demolished the illegal structures in the area.

Earlier, the Gujarat Home Ministry ordered the demolition of the structures built by these Bangladeshis.

Power Connections Cut A Day Ago

According to AMC officials, the mega demolition drive will continue across the Chandola area. Power connections to the illegal Bangladeshi settlements had been severed on Monday afternoon. Around 80 diggers and excavators (bulldozers) were brought in for the anti-encroachment operation in the Chandola Lake area. The AMC is prepared to remove the debris immediately after the demolition.

A large police force was deployed to maintain peace during the demolition drive carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Crime branch officers were also present at the scene. In addition, all officers at the PI level in the city were ordered to remain on site.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's action, 'Operation Clean', is being touted as the largest demolition drive in Gujarat's history. The AMC's action is being viewed by some as a 'bulldozer strike' on a 'mini-Bangladesh'.

Operation Clean is being carried out in coordination with the AMC and the Home Department. The entire operation is being monitored via drone surveillance.

Over 2000 Police Personnel Deployed

More than 2000 police officers and personnel have been deployed to successfully carry out 'Operation Clean'. The State Reserve Police and Crime Branch have made tight arrangements for the mega demolition. Estate officers from all seven zones of the AMC, officers from the Solid Waste Department and the Engineering Department are involved in this operation. 80 bulldozers and 60 dumpers have been used in this operation.
