DPAP Chief Ghulam Nabi Azad Dissolves All Party Committees In Jammu And Kashmir

Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), has dissolved all party units at various levels.

The chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad, dissolved all party units, including committees at the state, provincial, zonal, district, and block levels in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

Bashir Arif, secretary to Ghulam Nabi Azad, announced that the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) chief has dissolved all committees at the state, provincial, district, and block levels, with plans to reconstitute them in due course, according to a report by PTI.

Ghulam Nabi Azad had ended his more than 40-year association with the Congress party, where he once served as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in 2014. After completing his term, he criticised the party for being overly controlled by the Gandhi family and decided to sever ties.

On September 26, 2022, Ghulam launched the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) from Jammu and Kashmir, promising that “it will not be autocratic, but democratic". “The DAP will be based on the principles of democracy. It will not be influenced by any outside leader or other party. It will have independent thinking and will stay independent in its decisions. It will not be autocratic and power will not be in one hand," Azad stated on the launch day of the party.

Azad's Resignation From Congress

Azad had resigned from Congress on August 26, 2022, due to growing rifts with the leadership. Despite his ties with the Congress G23 rebel group, no members from that faction attended the launch of DAP. Azad had also advocated for forming a national party rather than a regional one.

DAP contested the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections last year but failed to secure any of the 90 seats. Following the defeat, several leaders deserted the party to return to Congress, including senior figures like Taj Mohiuddin and former Congress ministers from the region.
