Delhi Police Identifies Minor Behind Bomb Threats To Schools, Says 'Parent Linked To NGO With Deep Connections'

Delhi Police official said that it was difficult to carry out the probe due to the usage of VPN by the juvenile while sending the bomb threats. Further investigation is underway.

The Delhi Police on Tuesday revealed details from its ongoing probe in the bomb threats received in multiple schools in the national capital since February last year. Delhi Special CP Law and Order Madhup Tiwari said that it was discovered during the in-depth investigation that the parent of the minor boy arrested for sending the hoax bomb threat emails to schools has been found to have "deep connections" to an NGO which "questioned the legitimacy of the hanging of Afzal Guru", who was convicted for the 2001 attack on the Parliament.

The 17-year-old is a class 12 student in a private school in Delhi. He was held for his alleged involvement in sending over 400 bomb threat emails to Delhi schools since last year. It was earlier revealed that he had sent out emails to different schools to avoid sitting for school exams.

"Schools had been receiving (bomb threat) emails continuously, it started around 14th February. So, we conducted an in-depth investigation. But due to the usage of VPN etc, it was not easy to get a breakthrough...But we found a technical window regarding the email received on 8th Jan," Commissioner Tiwari said.

He further said that the juvenile was zeroed in after it was found that he had sent the mail. The Delhi Police had suspected an "anti-national or sabotage angle" in the matter, following which they conducted a profiling of the juvenile's family.

"As per our preliminary info, it was found that the NGO has deep connections to a particular political party. It supports that political party on several issues and had also questioned the legitimacy of the hanging of Afzal Guru. This is a preliminary investigation. Further investigation is yet to be done...He had been sending the mail since the beginning. There are at least 7 instances where we can say that it was he who sent the emails," he said.

The Delhi Police official also confirmed that the juvenile had sent the bomb threat emails at least seven times and that he was also involved in the incident in May last year when over 250 schools across Delhi received bomb threats.

He was held after at least seven private schools received bomb threats emails earlier this month. These threats were sent to south Delhi schools and said that a bomb would detonate during exams.
