Delhi Assembly Session Extended By 2 Days

Delhi Assembly Session extended by two days amid CAG report allegations of over ₹2,000 crore losses in scrapped excise policy.

In the latest development, the ongoing session of the Delhi Assembly has been extended by two days.

Earlier in the day, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta tabled the CAG report in the assembly. As per the report, the Delhi government suffered cumulative losses of over Rs 2,000 crore due to the now-scrapped 2021-2022 excise policy. As many as 15 MLAs, including former Chief Minister Atishi, were suspended from the House before the report was tabled.

The report has also flagged violations in the process of issuing licences. It has pointed out that recommendations of an expert panel, formed to suggest changes for the formation of the policy, were ignored by then deputy chief minister and excise minister Manish Sisodia.

The alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the policy had snowballed into a political punching bag used by the BJP after Lt Governor V K Saxena recommended a CBI probe in July 2022. The report has highlighted several issues in the policy over which former CM Arvind Kejriwal and Sisodia were arrested.

During his address, Delhi L-G VK Saxena faced slogans from the opposition MLAs. The L-G, in his address, said that the current Delhi government will pay special focus 10 areas to develop Delhi. He said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "PM Narendra Modi's mantra of 'sabka sath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayas, sabka samman' will be the guiding factor of my government... My government will stand up to the people's rising needs and expectations. My government will pay special focus on these 10 areas- corruption-free administration, women empowerment, the welfare of the poor, improvement in health services, good education model, world-class roads, clean and pollution-free Delhi, clean Yamuna, clean water, and regularisation of unauthorised colonies."
