The coin commemorates late DMK president M. Karunanidhi's five terms as Tamil Nadu chief minister and his influence beyond the state.

The Defence Minister highlighted Karunanidhi's political journey as a story of resilience and deep connection with the people. He emphasised that the tenure of Karunanidhi as a five-time chief minister was marked by his remarkable ability to address the needs of the common people. Despite being a regional leader, his impact was felt nationwide.

Singh further noted that Karunanidhi, affectionately known as 'Kalaignar,' recognised the strength of Indian democracy in accommodating diverse voices and identities. His role in national politics and coalition governments showed his commitment to the idea of India. Karunanidhi's advocacy for federalism and state rights, Singh said, was based on his understanding of India's unity in diversity and the need for a balanced distribution of power within the Union.

Karunanidhi Became First TN CM To Hoist National Flag On Independence Day: Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Singh stated that Karunanidhi emerged as a leader in the 1960s, which was a period of major transition in post-independence India. During those days several regional parties emerged and even managed to form the government. SVD (Samyukta Vidhayak Dal) coalition governments were formed in several north Indian states.

"While many regional parties that emerged during that time have vanished, Karunanidhi provided such a strong foundation to the DMK that it remains the only regional party of the 1960s continuing to hold power even today," he outlined.

Recalling M. Karunanidhi's support for the BJP-led NDA in the past, Singh admitted that his constructive role in the A B Vajpayee government, despite ideological differences. "His voice had an impact, and it was decided that only the chief minister would hoist the flag on Independence Day. In this way, Karunanidhi also became the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu to hoist the flag on August 15, 1974," he said, PTI reported.

Singh also emphasised Karunanidhi's ability to maintain strong relationships with national leaders across the political spectrum, demonstrating his statesmanship and respect for others' contributions to the nation."Karunanidhi fought for democracy and dedicated his life to bringing positive changes. The NDA government under PM Modi also believes in the power of democracy and cooperative federalism. India is not only fulfilling the aspirations of its 1.4 billion people but is also providing hope to people that democracy delivers development and empowers people," the defence minister added.

He went on to say that the Centre's dedication to development goes "beyond partisan politics," using the Defence Industrial Corridors it established in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh as examples. The purpose of these corridors was to lessen dependency on imports and increase domestic defense manufacturing.

Stalin and Singh had earlier floral tripute to the Karunanidhi memorial at the Marina. BJP state chief K Annamalai, Union Minister L Murugan, State Minister Udhayanidhi, and DMK MP Kanimozhi accompanied them.
