Bengaluru Stampede: BJP Holds Protest Demanding CM, Dy CM Resignations; Police Detain Protesters

The protest against Bengaluru Stampede, framed as a condolence meeting, saw BJP workers wearing face masks printed with the faces of CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.

The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday staged a strong protest at Freedom Park, holding the state government responsible for the tragic stampede that occurred near Chinnaswamy Stadium during an IPL celebration event. The incident, which claimed 11 lives, has sparked political tensions across the state. Later, the protesting BJP workers were detained by the police.

The protest, framed as a condolence meeting, saw BJP workers wearing face masks printed with the faces of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. They also paraded a mock IPL trophy to symbolically link the government’s alleged mismanagement to the deadly chaos that followed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s playoff victory.

Speaking at the protest, Karnataka Legislative Council Leader of Opposition and BJP MLC Chalavadi Narayanaswamy lashed out at the Congress-led government. MLC Chalavadi Narayanaswamy told ANI, "RCB won the (IPL) match and people were enjoying it. But what did the government have to do with it?...They called people to celebrate. Vidhana Soudha is not a playground, it should have been near the Chinnaswamy stadium. To take credit, this government messed up and 11 people died, yet the government did not accept its mistake. We want to teach them a lesson. The CM and Deputy CM should resign and if they don't, the protests will continue...Congress, not BJP, is doing politics of dead bodies...Being in the opposition, it is our right to ask questions..."
