Badlapur School Case: Internet Shut Down, 40 Arrested After Intense Protests Against Sexual Assault Of 2 Girls

Following the protests against the sexual assault of schoolgirls in Badlapur, 40 people were arrested, and internet services in the area were shut down.

Badlapur School Case: Thane Police arrested 40 people in the case pertaining to the alleged sexual assault of two nursery class kids by a male attendant at a local school in Maharashtra's Badlapur.

Following the protests, internet services in the area were shut down. FIRs have also been filed against 300 people who were part of the protests that erupted in Badlapur.

Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted to the arrests and FIRs in the Badlapur sexual assault case. "Reverse FIR. Imagine families desperate to seek justice for their daughters were forced to hit the streets because of government apathy and after being lathi charged, they are being FIRed and arrested. Shameless Maharashtra government," she said in a post on X.

Massive protests erupted at Railway Station on Tuesday against the alleged sexual assault incident. During the protests, local trains at the railway station were stopped as protestors chanted slogans demanding justice. The accused in the case Akshay Shinde was sent to police custody till August 24.

The incident took place on August 12-13, 2024 when two four-year-old girls studying in the pre-primary classes of a prominent co-ed school in Badlapur were allegedly sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old male cleaning staff member inside a girls’ toilet.

The girls had gone to use the washroom during their morning classes when the assault took place. No female staff were appointed by the school for the girls' toilets, reported Hindustan Times.

Badlapur Sexual Assault Case: Top Updates

  1. Reacting to the police action, the Leader of the Opposition in the state legislative council, Ambadas Danve, slammed the government and warned of the common people's anger in Maharashtra.

The accused, Akshay Shinde was hired on a contractual basis on August 1, 2024. He was made the charge of cleaning the girls' toilet when he sexually assaulted the girls. 
  4. Police on August 17 arrested an attendant at the school for sexually abusing two girl students of the kindergarten. As per the complaint, he abused the girls in the toilet of the school, an official said.
  5. While the school management has suspended the principal, a class teacher, and a female attendant, over the incident, the state government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of three police officials, including a senior police inspector, for alleged dereliction of duty in probing the sexual abuse of the two girls.
  6. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he ordered the formation of a special investigation team headed by senior IPS officer Arti Singh and the suspension of three police officials.
  7. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said action will be taken against the school, adding that the case will be fast-tracked and the guilty won’t be spared.
