CRISIL: Price Of Homemade Veg Thali In July Rises Faster Than Non-Veg. Find Out Why

Homemade thalis became more expensive in July as commodity prices surged, the latest report by CRISIL M&A Research revealed. The survey found that the price of homemade vegetarian thali jumped by 11 per cent in July 2024 against the preceding month. Meanwhile, the non-vegetarian home-cooked thali saw a price rise by 6 per cent on a month-on-month basis. 

For the vegetarian thali, the survey found that 7 per cent out of the overall 11 per cent jump in prices was driven by the surge in the cost of tomatoes in the market. Notably, the price of tomato climbed 55 per cent in July to Rs 66 per kg, against Rs 42 per kg clocked in June, reported The Indian Express. 

This resulted in an increase in the price of the veg thali to Rs 32.6 in July, while the non-veg thali’s cost in the month touched Rs 61.4. Comparatively, in June, the prices of veg and non-veg thali stood at Rs 29.4 and Rs 58 respectively.

The soaring temperatures registered during the month were attributed to this increase in prices. Further, key producing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh suffered a major blow to the summer crop because of the extreme weather conditions. Uneven rainfall in the former state during May also escalated whitefly infestations, in turn, affecting the output of the crop.

Onion and potato prices climbed 20 per cent and 16 per cent respectively on a month-on-month basis, adding on to the cost of the veg thali, CRISIL noted. On the other hand, rabi production in lower numbers impacted onion prices, and late blight infestation in Punjab, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh influenced potato production. 

Meanwhile, the cost of broiler remained stable and this helped limit the price rise in the non-veg thali. Notably, the broiler contributes to over 50 per cent of the overall cost of the thali.
