Festive Sales Surge Drives 15-20% Yearly Increase In Temporary Hiring

E-commerce and logistics are expected to experience the most significant increase in temporary hiring, projected to rise 30-35 per cent. However, strong demand is also anticipated in other sectors

The approaching festive season is set to ignite a surge in temporary hiring, with an estimated 600,000-700,000 new jobs expected across various industries. This increase in demand for temporary workers is projected to rise by 15-20 per cent year-on-year, driven by anticipated boosts in consumer spending, a revival in the rural economy due to favourable harvest prospects, and a strong performance in the stock market.

Staffing firms such as Quess, Randstad, Adecco, CIEL HR Services, and TeamLease Services have highlighted these trends, reported The Economic Times.

E-commerce and logistics are expected to experience the most significant increase in temporary hiring, projected to rise 30-35 per cent. However, strong demand is also anticipated in the consumer, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), retail, and hospitality sectors, according to the firms, as per the report.

“We are still in the early stages, but there’s already been a considerable rise in festive demand. We are expecting to see some 600,000- 700,000 temp jobs being created across sectors this year,” said Lohit Bhatia, president of workforce management at Quess Corp.

Bhatia, also the president of the Indian Staffing Federation, noted that while people curtailed spending during the harsh summer months and the extended election period, they are expected to start spending more freely during the festive season.

“Consumer durables/goods companies will put out new products, new schemes; banks/NBFCs (non-banking finance companies) will push loans, credit cards; luxury consumption will go up, as will e-commerce sales. All these require many more hands onboard during the festive period,” he said.

The festive season, beginning with Raksha Bandhan on August 19 and Onam and continuing through Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja, Diwali, and extending to Christmas and New Year, represents nearly two-thirds of the annual business for many companies across the country.
