Unemployment In Women In Urban Areas Dips In Q3, Reveals Survey

The survey found that the unemployment rate among people aged 15 years and above in urban areas stood at the 6.4 per cent, remaining flat from the preceding July-September quarter in the FY25.

The unemployment rate in the October-December quarter remained flat at 6.4 per cent, official data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) revealed. The survey found that the unemployment rate among people aged 15 years and above in urban areas stood at the same level in the preceding July-September quarter in the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY25).

However, in comparison, the unemployment rate in the third quarter a year earlier stood at 6.5 per cent. The 25th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) defined joblessness or unemployment rate as the percentage of unemployed people in the labour force, reported PTI.

Gender Wise Comparison

Among females in the category, the survey showed that the unemployment rate declined to 8.1 per cent in October-December 2024, as compared to 8.6 per cent clocked in the same period a year earlier. The same figure stood at 8.4 per cent in the July-September 2024 period.

In males, the unemployment rate in urban areas remained flat at 5.8 per cent in the third quarter, as compared to the same period a year earlier. In the second quarter, the unemployment rate in the category stood at 5.7 per cent.

Labour force participation rate in Current Weekly Status (CWS) in urban areas increased to 50.4 per cent in the third quarter of the current fiscal year, improving from 49.9 per cent clocked in the corresponding period last year. The labour force indicates the part of the population which supplies or offers to supply labour for pursuing economic activities for the production of goods and services and includes employed and unemployed people.

The PLFS was launched by the NSSO in 2017. The estimate of unemployed individuals in the CWS gives an idea of the unemployment situation in the country. The labour force represents the number of people employed or unemployed on an average in the week preceding the survey date.
