CBI Arrests Former WAPCOS CMD R K Gupta And Son, Seizes Rs 38 Crore In Cash

The CBI said that during searches cash of Rs 38.38 crore (approx), FDRs, keys of bank Lockers and details of accounts in various banks have been recovered from the premises of the accused

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the former CMD of WAPCOS, Rajinder Kumar Gupta, and his son Gaurav Singal for alleged possession of disproportionate assets and recovered Rs 38.38 crore during a raid conducted at their multiple locations. The probing agency carried out raids at 19 locations in Delhi, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Sonepat, and Ghaziabad and recovered Rs. 38.8 crore, a significant amount of jewellery, valuable items, and incriminating documents at the premises of the accused.

The investigative agency in a press release said, "The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested the former CMD of WAPCOS and his son in a Disproportionate Assets case. During searches conducted so far, cash of Rs 38.38 crore (approx), FDRs, keys of bank Lockers and details of accounts in various banks have been recovered from the premises of the accused."

"A case was registered against former CMD, Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (WAPCOS, a Govt of India Undertaking under Ministry of Jal Shakti) and his family members on the allegations that the accused during the tenure from 01.04.2011 to 31.03.2019 had possessed disproportionate assets way beyond his known sources of income," the CBI release said. 

Gupta had been booked recently for amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. An FIR was registered against Gupta, his wife Reema Singal, his son Gaurav Singal, and his daughter-in-law Komal Singal on Tuesday. "An FIR has been registered against Rajinder Kumar Gupta, former CMD, WAPCOS, his wife, Reema Singal, his son, Gaurav Singal, and his daughter-in-law, Komal Singal," the CBI said on Tuesday.

Following the FIR, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a search at the premises of the accused and recovered Rs 20 crores in cash, along with property-related documents and other valuables. A CBI official said that of the Rs 20 crore, around Rs 10 crores was found at the property of Gupta and his relatives in Chandigarh.

WAPCOS, formerly known as Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited, is a central public sector enterprise that is wholly owned by the government and falls under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti.
