Internet Responds With 'Kabhi Covid Na Kehna' Memes After Adar Poonawalla Buys 50% In Dharma

Social media users were quick to react, poking fun at the unexpected association between the Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer and Bollywood

In a surprising move that has sparked a wave of reactions online, billionaire Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, is set to acquire a 50 percent stake in Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. The entertainment company made the official announcement on Monday, revealing that the deal is worth Rs 1,000 crore.

Social media users were quick to react, poking fun at the unexpected association between the Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer and Bollywood. The deal triggered a flood of memes, with many drawing humorous connections between Poonawalla’s role in vaccine production and Dharma's film projects.

"Mere Covishield ke paise se Student of the Year 3 banayenge (They will make Student of the Year 3 with the money I paid for my Covishield vaccine)," quipped comedian Uddhav Parab on X. Another user, cinema enthusiast Nirupama Kotru, joined in the fun by suggesting titles such as "Vaccine with Karan," "Medical Student of the Year," and "Kabhi Covid Na Kehna, Kabhi Sui Kabhi Balgam."

The deal was described by some social media users as a "booster shot for Bollywood," while others pointed out the close ties between Poonawalla’s wife, Natasha, a prominent Bollywood socialite, and Karan Johar.

According to an official statement from Dharma Productions, Karan Johar will retain the remaining 50 per cent stake in the company and continue as its executive chairman. Apoorva Mehta will also remain in his role as CEO.

The statement highlighted the rationale behind the partnership: "India's entertainment industry has experienced significant expansion, driven by surging digital penetration and a diverse audience seeking high-quality content across multiple platforms, with growing global relevance. This strategic partnership between Serene Productions and Dharma is designed to capitalise on these opportunities by combining Dharma's rich legacy in storytelling with Adar Poonawalla's strategic acumen and resources."

The collaboration aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies and innovative production methods to transform content creation, distribution, and audience engagement.

In his own statement, Poonawalla expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to partner with one of the most iconic production houses in our nation, along with my friend Karan Johar. We hope to build and grow Dharma and scale even greater heights in the years to come."

As the entertainment and healthcare sectors unite in this unexpected partnership, all eyes are on what this collaboration will bring to Bollywood's future.
