NEP SAARATHIs: Students Leading The Charge For Educational Reform – Discusses Pranav Gupta Of Ashoka University

Pranav Gupta, Ashoka University Founder, talks about NEP SAARATHI.

In a significant stride towards transforming higher education in India, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a momentous step by introducing NEP SAARATHIs. This initiative aims to provide students with a platform to actively participate in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. With the aim of fostering greater student engagement and promoting awareness of the comprehensive reforms within the higher education system, as delineated in NEP 2020, the UGC has issued a call to vice-chancellors, directors, and principals of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to put forth three student nominations from their respective institutions for potential selection as NEP SAARATHIs. Pranav Gupta Ashoka University Founder states, “The NEP SAARATHIs represent a groundbreaking approach to educational reform. By involving students in policy implementation, we are empowering the future leaders of India to take an active role in shaping their own education.”

Empowering Student Voices in NEP Implementation

SAARATHI, an acronym for Student Ambassadors for Academic Reforms in Transforming Higher Education in India, is an embodiment of the UGC's commitment to fostering student involvement in shaping the future of education. The UGC announced the selection of 721 NEP SAARATHIs from 262 higher education institutions across the country, who will play pivotal roles in advancing academic reforms as outlined in the NEP SAARATHI guidelines.

The launch of such a student-friendly initiative aligns perfectly with the ethos of the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes the need to tap into the unique perspectives, creativity, and leadership potential of students. Mr. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, the Chairman of UGC, emphasized the central role of students in educational policies, stating, “Students are the cornerstones of any education policy. Acknowledging this, NEP SAARATHI is a first-time attempt that promotes student engagement in policy implementation to nurture leadership and civic sensibilities.”

A Multifaceted Approach to Educational Reform

The NEP SAARATHIs will be tasked with leading a series of programmes within their respective campuses and communities, facilitating direct interactions with policymakers and regulatory leaders mentions Pranav Gupta Ashoka University Founder. This multifaceted approach to educational reform promises several prospective benefits for Indian higher education.

Student-Centric Policies: With students at the forefront of policy implementation, there is a greater likelihood of creating policies that genuinely cater to the needs and aspirations of the student community. These student ambassadors can provide invaluable insights and feedback, ensuring that policies are student-centric.

Innovation and Fresh Perspective: Students bring a fresh and innovative perspective to the table. Their unique ideas and perspectives can inject new life into higher education, leading to innovative teaching methods, curricular enhancements, and improved learning outcomes. “Students have a unique perspective on learning. By harnessing their creativity and ideas, we can revolutionize teaching methods and curriculum design, ensuring that our education system remains relevant and competitive on a global scale,” remarks Gupta.

Enhanced Civic Sensibilities: Through active participation in policymaking, students can gain a deeper understanding of the democratic process and civic responsibilities. This experience can contribute to the development of future leaders who are well-versed in the nuances of governance and policy.

Speaking about the broader impact of SAARATHI on civic engagement, Pranav Gupta of Ashoka University comments, “Engaging students in policymaking not only enhances their education but also instils a sense of civic responsibility. This step will undoubtedly turn students into ambassadors of positive change in their communities, advocating for educational reforms that benefit all. The youth are the leaders of tomorrow.”
