New Delhi (India), June 6: Khul Ke, the upcoming homegrown social networking platform dedicated to fostering meaningful discussions, recently hosted renowned speaker Shyam Mohan for an enlightening conversation on ISRO's remarkable strides in developing a Swadeshi Space Plane. Shyam Mohan, an esteemed aerospace engineer and advocate for indigenous space technology, delivered an insightful dialogue on ISRO's groundbreaking efforts to develop a Swadeshi Space Plane—an ambitious project aiming to establish India's self-reliance in space exploration.
The RLV project undertaken by ISRO is part of its long-term vision to develop cost-effective and sustainable space access capabilities. The organization has been working on multiple technology demonstrators and prototypes to validate key technologies and concepts required for achieving a fully operational reusable launch vehicle system.
Elated about its success, Mohan shared, “It’s the first time in the world that a Chinook helicopter is flying with a winged body at this altitude. Nobody has done this because flying a rotary aircraft along with a winged body at the bottom, nobody has ventured or attempted this. That, too, at an altitude of 4.5 km, was also the first time in the world. It’s a record. So, we have understood that a combination of wing body along with the rotary aircraft that too with the double rotor, that was a real learning experience by doing this mission.”
“As a space vehicle, we have to steer it to space in a specific orbit, and it has to come back and land; that is the mission we are envisaging, that has a lot of applications which are beyond our imagination. Presently we don’t have a plan to have a man on board, but that is not the primary objective of the vehicle. The mission cost is only the operational cost. The entire vehicle is with us. That’s the beauty of RLV”, he further added.
The conversation goes on and throws light on Mohan’s versatility. He goes on to share a personal anecdote, “I was given a slot of Gazal with the wife of this director at Doordarshan, and then we had a rehearsal at his house. When we were practising the rehearsal, he spotted me, and probably after seeing my beard, he thought that this fellow could role as an artist; then he asked me whether I could do it, I was thrilled, and I accepted.”
When spoken to about his second innings in life, Mohan humbly shared, “My priority will be different, so far I have been serving our country through ISRO, so I would like to do something for the betterment of the country through ISRO or some other means this way I'm not very inclined to making money out the technology other than strengthening our country, would give me more thrill and satisfaction to take our country to another level.”
