History Of Lalbaugcha Raja

The history of Lalbaug dates back to the early 1900s when the Parel area was abuzz with textile mills. But in the 1930s, the region reeled under industrial turmoil which shook the very pillars of sustenance provided by local mill workers and inhabitants.

According to the local legends, during these painful times, the local fishermen and traders began praying to the most favoured deity of all; 'Lord Ganesha' for divine intervention. It was the people thus prayed to who gave a plot of land that later came to be the bustling market of Lalbaug. A divine gift from Ganesha, the plot of land was thought to be by the community, and thus the devotion became immeasurable.

Hence as a token of gratitude, some of this plot was used to celebrate the Ganesh Utsav. Consequently, it gave birth to the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, wherein, on this day, the idol of Lord Ganpati is worshipped. The idol is gorgeously attired, and over time, the occasion has evolved into a mega event.
