Dhanteras 2023: What To Avoid Buying On This Auspicious Day — All You Need To Know

Discover the list of items to avoid buying on Dhanteras 2023, an auspicious Hindu festival. Learn the superstitions and traditions that guide purchases on this significant occasion.

Dhanteras is a significant Hindu festival that marks the commencement of the five-day Diwali celebrations known as the Festival of Lights. Celebrated on November 10 this year, Dhanteras holds special importance as people worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, seeking prosperity and wealth. Traditionally, items like metal or clay idols of deities, gold, silver, copper, and various household goods are bought during this festival. However, there are specific items that one should steer clear of purchasing on Dhanteras. Here's a list of things that are best avoided on this auspicious day.

What Not To Buy On Dhanteras:

  1. Iron: It is believed to be inauspicious to purchase iron utensils or iron-based items on Dhanteras. Furthermore, it is thought that buying iron on this day does not invoke the blessings of Lord Kuber, the God of wealth.

  2. Steel: Although many follow the tradition of acquiring steel goods and utensils on Dhanteras, it is recommended not to buy steel items. Instead, opt for copper or bronze articles.

  3. Sharp Objects: To preserve the sanctity of Dhanteras, people abstain from buying sharp objects such as knives and scissors, as these are believed to bring bad luck to the household.

  4. Empty Vessels: Purchasing empty utensils or vessels that do not contain food or water is considered pointless since they are typically not filled by the vendor. Thus, people fill them with water or food before entering their homes on Dhanteras.

  5. Glassware: It is considered inauspicious to buy glassware or glass items on Dhanteras due to their association with Rahu.

  6. Aluminium and Plastic Products: During Dhanteras, it is advisable to steer clear of aluminium and plastic products and opt for metal articles instead.

  7. Oil and Ghee: Purchasing oil or ghee on Dhanteras is deemed inauspicious. If you require these ingredients, it's better to buy them a day in advance or after Dhanteras.

  8. Fake Gold: While gold is a popular choice on Dhanteras, fake gold jewellery, coins, and other items should not be part of your purchases.
