Bhai Dooj Significance:
According to a mythological story, Yamuna invited her brother, Yama (the Lord of Death), to her home for a meal. When Yama visited his sister's house, she applied a tilak on his forehead and served him food. At that moment, Yama asked for a boon: that any sister who applies a tilak on her brother's forehead on the Kartik month's Shukla Dwitiya Tithi and feeds him will ensure that her brother is freed from Yama's fear. Yama on being granted the request, offered Yamuna a gift, and returned to the Yamaloka. Hence, Bhai Dooj is celebrated. It is also known as Yama Dwitiya.
On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters who perform the tilak ceremony on their brothers' foreheads during an auspicious time ensure their brothers' well-being, longevity, righteousness, prosperity, and limitless happiness throughout the year.
