Why is Bahula Chauth Celebrated?
In the scriptures, cows are given special importance and are revered as a mother. Women who worship cows on this day are believed to be blessed with children and protection from all dangers. According to Hindu mythology, once, Lord Krishna appeared before a cow named Bahula in the form of a lion. Bahula, ready to sacrifice herself, requested the lion to allow her to feed her calf before becoming his prey. Moved by the cow’s love for her calf, the lion let her go, and true to her word, Bahula returned after feeding her calf. Lord Krishna, pleased with her devotion and sense of duty, blessed Bahula and declared that those who worship her in Kaliyuga would have happy and safe children.
How is Bahula Chauth Vrat Observed?
On Bahula Chaturthi, one should not consume any product made from cow’s milk, as the milk is considered the right of the calf. Women observe a fast throughout the day and worship the cow in the evening. Offerings are made using a clay pot covered with a crust, and after the puja, the offerings are consumed as the meal. Consuming dairy products on this day is considered a sin.
