Andhra Pradesh Weather: Chintapalle Shivers At 1.5 Degrees, A Day After Recording 11.5 Degrees
This is the second time in the last five years that mercury dipped to 1.5 degrees Celsius in this region. Temperatures may go down further this season, says official.
It's not the northern India alone that is witnessing extreme cold conditions. Mercury dipped to 1.5 degrees at a few places even in Andhra Pradesh Sunday. Chintapalle village in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitarama Raju district recorded a minimum temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday. This is the second time in the last five years that the temperature has dipped so low in this region, according to M Suresh Kumar, Nodal Officer and Senior Scientist at the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS).
The last time Chintapalle recorded a minimum temperature of 1.5 degrees was on December 31, 2018.
RARS is a regional meteorological centre located in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district. "There's an automated system at the research station to record temperatures and we also record it manually. Both should be the same, and then we take note."
However, the minimum temperature recorded in the village on Saturday was 11.5 degrees, and that on the preceding day was 17 degrees Celsius. "For the last one week, there has been a cyclone alert for the region and that was the reason for temperatures to record over 10 degrees last week," said Kumar.
Lambasingi, which is known as Andhra's Kashmir, might have recorded 1 degree Celsius on Sunday, said the scientist. He said the lowest temperature ever recorded at Chintapalle was 0 degrees Celsius on January 6, 1992. Ever since, he said, the minimum temperature has dipped to 1 degree on four occasions — December 30, 1998; January 5, 1999; January 17, 2003; and January 15, 2012.
"There's a possibility of a further drop in the temperatures this season," Suresh said.
Besides Chintapalle, Andhra Pradesh's Hukumpeta and Kunthalam also recorded a minimum temperature of 1.5 degrees, while GK Veedi witnessed 2.2 degrees, Dumbriguda 2.6 degrees, and Gamparai 2.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
