Andhra Pradesh Assembly Passes Resolution Requesting Centre To Take Up Caste Census For OBC

Andhra Pradesh's backward classes minister Chelluboyina Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna introduced the resolution in the state Assembly

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Tuesday has passed a resolution seeking the Centre to take up a caste-based census of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Andhra Pradesh's backward classes minister Chelluboyina Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna introduced the resolution in the state Assembly, which was initiated by The British and have enumerated the castes from 1881 to 1930. Since then the caste-based census has been ceased.

"The state legislative assembly is of the unanimous view that there is a need to take up caste-based census in order to ensure equal justice to all sections of people as envisaged in the preamble of the Indian Constitution. The enumeration of the other backward classes, along with the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities as part of the 2021 general census,” the resolution said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The resolution throwing light on the significance of the census stated that the statistics would play a vital role in spearheading various developmental schemes for the betterment of the backward classes.

The minister called the OBC to be the backbone of the society and he asserted that the data of the caste census is over 90 years old and the schemes can't be initiated based on that data.
