Post recent shootouts, US students given bullet-resistant shields

New York [US], June 6 (ANI): When the United States government failed to contain deadly incidents of gun shooting within the high school campuses in the country, the schools themselves came to the rescue by providing students with bullet resistant shields.

As per a report in the New York Times on Tuesday, St.Cornelius Catholic School situated in Chadds Ford provided a bullet-resistant shield to be attached to the backpacks of the eighth-grade students.

As per school's principal Barbara Rosini, it is a sad situation as she said in an interview, "It is something that will help keep our kids, or any child or any adult, safe, that is unfortunately where we are now."

While the students said that they have never anticipated such a situation.

Some schools are even considering installing, bullet- resistant windows and metal detectors.

There has been a critical response from the gun control advocates as they said; the schools are resorting to such measures due to lack of actions taken by legislators.

Since a gunman killed 20 first graders and six adults with an assault rifle at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, there have been at least 239 school shootings nationwide, according to an analysis in February provided by the Gun Violence Archive. In those episodes, 438 people were shot, 138 of whom were killed.

Some of the recent high-school shooting incidents were the Texas school shooting where eight people were killed followed by the Georgia shooting in which one person was killed and two were injured and the recent one to be Indiana Middle School shooting where three were injured.

Following the recent occurrences of the deadly shooting in the school campuses targeting the students and faculty, there has been a widespread demand for stringent gun control laws in the country as part of which a large number of people mainly students participated in "March for Our Lives".

Earlier on May 23, Governor of Louisiana John Bel Edwards signed a bill allowing students to wear bulletproof backpacks in schools.

Till now, 15 students and 25 faculty members of a school have received military laboratories-tested SafeShields.

Made of a Kevlar composite, the SafeShields measure about 10 inches by 12 inches and weigh about as much as two eight-ounce cans of soda. (ANI)
