Breaking News: Russia Shaken By Intense 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake | ABP News
Russia's Shiveluch volcano has erupted, sending ash up to 8 kilometers into the sky, following a magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the eastern coast of the country, according to CNN and the state-run TASS news agency. The eruption has resulted in a significant lava flow, but there have been no reports of injuries. The earthquake struck at a depth of 51 km (32 miles) off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, as reported by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). There were mixed reports regarding tsunami warnings. The US National Tsunami Warning Center indicated a potential tsunami threat, while Russia's Kamchatka emergency ministry stated that there was no such threat. Aftershocks from the earthquake have been recorded with magnitudes ranging from 3.9 to 5.0. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake's epicenter was located about 102 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a port city with over 181,000 residents, situated across a bay from a key Russian submarine base. The Shiveluch volcano, approximately 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is one of the world’s largest and most active volcanoes, known for its frequent and intense eruptions. Russian news agencies reported no significant damage from the earthquake. Buildings are currently being inspected for potential damage, with a focus on social facilities. The US National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu has warned of possible minor sea level changes in coastal areas near the earthquake's epicenter over the next few hours.
