'Yeh Log Life Jee Rhe Hain, Aur Hum...': Indian Employee's Europe Trip Sparks Debate On Quality Of Life

An Indian employee's Europe trip left him questioning India's work culture, infrastructure, and quality of life, sparking a debate on living vs. merely surviving.

An Indian professional’s recent visit to Europe has left him questioning the stark differences in work culture, infrastructure, and quality of life between India and European countries. In a widely discussed Reddit post, he shared his experiences from a 15-day trip to cities like Amsterdam, Paris, and Zurich, where he observed a vastly different lifestyle that made him feel "envious."
Upon returning, he expressed his thoughts candidly, saying, “No disrespect to our country, I love everything about India, but when I went there, I felt envious about everything they had.” He pointed out Europe’s cleaner air, superior infrastructure, disciplined lifestyle, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.

One of the biggest differences he highlighted was the European approach to work-life balance. While his company’s founder in Denmark emphasized “work culture, flexibility in working hours, and more importantly, mental health,” he compared this to Indian corporate leaders who often glorify long working hours. “Our founders speak about 12-hour workdays and other BS things,” he lamented.

Living vs. Surviving

A particularly thought-provoking moment for him came when his friend remarked, “Yeh log life jee rhe hai, aur hm kaat rhe hai” (They are living life, we are surviving it). This statement resonated deeply, leading him to introspect about the struggles faced by Indian citizens, from long working hours to bureaucratic inefficiencies.
His observations extended beyond just work culture. He praised European public transport for its punctuality and organization, contrasting it with India’s often chaotic system. He also shared an incident in Switzerland where a ticket vendor helped him understand currency exchange without charging a conversion fee—an act of kindness that stood in stark contrast to experiences in India.

The Reddit user admitted feeling disheartened after returning to India. He questioned why basic rights like clean air, quality food, and free education remain out of reach for many citizens. “I always feel that we, the citizens of India, shall have the right to basic human needs, food security, and free education. What stops us from making such a radical change?” he asked.

Users Reaction To The Post

One of the users added, “Every Indian should visit some developed country. For India to become a better place, it is important for everyone to truly understand how shitty our conditions are and where we actually stand compared to others. Otherwise, things will continue as they are, with self praise and delusions,” in the comment section.
Whereas the other one said, “If you really hate being here.. hustle, leave, go, never return. I hope everything you feel, should be your living reality every single day. We deserve better. But we will never get that here in India. Power hungry, greedy, illiterate politicians will never let that happen..”
