Pakistan Prays For Noor Jehan As Karachi Zoo Faces Criticism Over ‘Neglect’ Of Animals

The incident has prompted criticism from wildlife organisations and activists across the world, over the "poor" condition of animals in Paksitani zoos.

The condition of Noor Jehan, an elephant that was injured after falling into a pond in a small enclosure at Karachi zoo is still critical as a team of foreign veterinary experts from the global animal welfare organisation, Four Paws, have been invited by Pakistan to help her recover from the injury, reported the Arab News Pakistan.

Last week, zoo authorities said the 17-year-old ailing female elephant walked into a pond inside her enclosure and got stuck there. She was taken out of the pond with the help of a crane, ropes and belts after which she has been lying with very little motion on a mound of sand, propped up against the only tree inside the enclosure.

The incident has prompted criticism from wildlife organisations and activists across the world, over the "poor" condition of animals in Paksitani zoos.

Taking to Twitter, World Wide Fund for Nature -Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) Wrote," Noor Jehan's story is heartbreaking! It is also unfortunate because this is a familiar story of elephant neglect in Pakistan's zoos."

A similar sentiment is being expressed by the people of Pakistan who have been praying for the speedy recovery of the pachyderm after the unfortunate incident.

"All Zoos in Pakistan should be closed or get private. Our govt dept are mostly incompetent & corrupt. May Allah give speedy recovery to Nor Jaha," commented one user on WWF's Twitter post.

"Tragic indeed at the same time must set the right  example with a clear intent to learn from all such incidents across the board," wrote another user.

"Campaign to ban all zoos in Pakistan. Our govts can't handle them," wrote a third.

"Please rescue all animals from karachi zoo, they r dieing of starvation, wrote a fourth.

Noor Jehan is suffering from a huge hematoma, or pool of clotted blood, inside her abdomen in addition to intestinal issues, Four Paws member Dr. Amir Khalil said during his visit to treat her last week, Reuters reported.
