‘End of an Era’: Internet Remembers The Good Old Days As Microsoft Plans To Shut Down Skype In 2025

Microsoft will shut down Skype on May 5, 2025, and move users to Microsoft Teams. People online are remembering Skype’s impact, calling it the “end of an era.” Users can move or save their data.

In a major shift in its communication services, Microsoft has announced that it will officially shut down Skype on May 5, 2025. The tech giant will transfer all the existing users to the free version of Microsoft Teams, marking the end of an era for one of the most iconic video-calling platforms. According to Microsoft, existing Skype users will be able to log in to Microsoft Teams using their current credentials. Their message history, group chats, and contacts will be automatically available in Teams without the need to create a new account. Additionally, for those who prefer to leave the platform, Microsoft is offering an option to export their data.

Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaborative apps and platforms, reassured users in an interview with The Verge, stating that Skype users will have full control over their transition. “They can migrate their conversation history and their contacts out and move on if they want, or they can migrate to Teams,” said Teper.

How Social Media User Reacts

The announcement has stirred emotions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users are reminiscing about Skype’s golden days. One user simply wrote, “End of an era,” while another added, “RIP Skype 2003-2025.”

For many, Skype was more than just a video-calling app—it was a connection to loved ones. One user shared, “RIP Skype. I grew up in the USVI away from all my family, so Skype was the only way I could see my grandparents, cousins, and everyone else. Thank you, Skype.” Another one wrote, “I have so many good and bad memories of trying to figure out Skype when it launched. When I learned how to use it, it changed my business. It was amazing back then. RIP, Skype.”

User Scrutinize The Possible Reasons

According to many social media users, Zoom was one of the biggest reasons for Microsoft to hang Skye. One of them said, “Had a 17 year head start and got bodied by zoom the second covid started.” Another one humorously wrote, “i know for a fact skypes ceo has a picture of zoom pinned on his wall that he throws darts at.”

“Microsoft is finally pulling the plug on Skype. Honestly, most people I know in the U.S. ditched it back in 2009 when Google Voice launched,” said a third one.

Microsoft’s Shift to Teams

Skype, which was launched in 2003, revolutionized online communication, paving the way for internet-based video calls. However, in recent years, Microsoft has increasingly focused on developing Microsoft Teams, especially as remote work and digital collaboration became more prevalent during the pandemic.
