Telangana Tops National Cybercrime Charts With 15,297 Cases In 2022: NCRB

Telangana registered the highest number of 15,297 cybercrime cases in the country in 2022. According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, cybercrime in the state has been on an upward trajectory with 5,024 cases in 2020 and 10,303 in 2021. In 2022, NCRB data showed Telangana registered the highest number of cybercrime cases followed by Karnataka with 12,556 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 10,117 cases among the 28 states.
Last year, the 28 states collectively reported 64,907 cybercrime cases. In Telangana, the rate of total cybercrime cases per lakh population was 40.3, with a charge sheet filed in 17.1% of cases, as per the available data.
The breakdown of cybercrime cases in Telangana includes 624 instances of ATM frauds, 3,223 cases of online banking frauds, 2,179 cases of OTP frauds, 4,467 cheating frauds, 280 cases of cyber stalking, and 234 cases of cyber blackmailing/threatening.
The primary motive behind 10,991 cases was fraud, followed by extortion in 447 cases, as revealed by the data.
K’taka Sees 86% Increase In Crimes Against Elderly From 2020-22: NCRB Data
Crimes against senior citizens in Karnataka saw an alarming 86% surge from 2020 to 2022, as per the recent data released by the NCRB. The figures revealed a notable rise from 853 cases in 2020 to 1,583 in 2022, with the corresponding figure in 2021 being 1,442. The report highlighted that many senior citizens fell victim to crimes such as forgery, cheating, and theft.
An in-depth analysis of the NCRB 2022 data positioned Karnataka as the state with the seventh-highest number of crimes against senior citizens among the 28 states in India. Madhya Pradesh topped the list with 6,187 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 5,059 and Tamil Nadu with 2,376.
In terms of rates, Karnataka reported 27.3 cases per lakh population, while the rate of charge sheeting in such cases was 77.8, according to the NCRB data.
Crimes against senior citizens in Karnataka also included 91 cases of murder, 48 cases of attempt to murder, 18 cases of grievous hurt, 65 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty, four cases of kidnapping and abduction and two cases of rape.
