Telangana Government Urges Joint Survey To Address Polavaram Flooding
The TS officials informed the PPA that standing water at full reservoir level (FRL) will submerge 892 acres from Bhadrachalam to Dummugudem on either side.
Telangana State Irrigation authorities once again highlighted the issue of districts submerging under Polavaram's backwaters. The Telangana engineers submitted a detailed memorandum on the backwater issue, urging the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) to conduct a new survey with an independent agency.
The Telangana engineers in Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) meeting in Hyderabad Wednesday claimed that the Polavaram project's backwater levels affecting Bhadrachalam town and the adjacent villages will become a common occurrence once the project is completed and when the water is stored at the full reservoir level.
Irrigation Engineer-in-Chief (ENC) C Muralidhar said that the backwater effect would cause local drainage congestion along the river banks and local streams such as Peddavagu, Edullavagu, Pamuleru vagu, Turubakavagu and 31 other major and medium streams to cause loss and destruction in Telangana on either side of the river Godavari.

The Telangana officials informed the PPA that standing water at full reservoir level will submerge 892 acres from Bhadrachalam to Dummugudem on either side. The 892 acres include 364 acres in Nagineniprolu (Burgampadu mandal), 154 acres in Seetharam Nagaram (Palvancha), 125 acres in Mothhey (Burgampadu), 93 acres in Iravendi (Burgampadu), 86 acres in Thurubaka village (Dummugudem mandal) and 70 acres in Anandapuram (Aswapuram).
They suggested pumping arrangements must be made along the flood banks, which need to be maintained throughout the year.
The Telangana officials said, that the Andhra Pradesh government failed to demarcate the areas affected due to stagnation along Murreduvagu and Kinnerasani, which shall be undertaken on priority along with the demarcation of areas affected due to similar issues of 35 other streams.
The officials alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government was taking up unauthorized Lift Irrigation Project on dead storage of the Polavaram project.
