Eminent Statistician CR Rao Passes Away At 102. Andhra CM, Telangana Guv Express Condolences

Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr CR Rao went on to win the International Prize in Statistics (2023).

Prominent mathematician and statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, widely known as CR Rao, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 102. Rao passed away in the United States. Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr CR Rao, who completed his Masters from Andhra University, went on to win the International Prize in Statistics (2023), which is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed their condolences on the passing of the renowned mathematician.

The Chief Minister noted that CR Rao was a distinguished mathematician and statistician who excelled in his chosen field. 

While conveying his condolences to the bereaved family members of the centenarian, the Chief Minister recalled Dr Rao's significant contributions to the field of statistics, including the Cramer-Rao bound and the Rao-Blackwell theorem.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said Rao's "monumental work" would continue to enormously impact the discipline of statistics and varied other disciplines.

"Deeply shocked to know about the passing away of eminent Indian-American scientist Dr.C.R.Rao garu. His works earned him the prestigious International Prize in Statistics-2023 and his monumental work in statistics will continue to enormously impact the discipline of statistics and varied other disciplines. He remains a great inspiration to many aspiring scientists across generations. In his demise, Mother India lost one of its great scientists. Heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family," the Governnor tweeted.

CR Rao was born in Ballari, which was part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency and is now in Karnataka. After completing his Masters in Mathematics, he joined Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta.
