Centre Allots Rs 2.5 Cr To Telangana Government For Sammakka Saralamma Jathara

The Sammakka-Sarakka jathara -- India's biggest tribal fair to commemorate a revolt against taxes levied on tribal people -- between Feb 16-19

New Delhi: Medaram, a rural hamlet in Telangana's Mulugu district to host the Sammakka-Sarakka jathara -- India's biggest tribal fair to commemorate a revolt against taxes levied on tribal people -- between Feb 16-19. The revolt was led by a mother-daughter duo, Samakkara and Saralamma.

The government of India has approved the release of Rs 2.5 crore for celebrating Sammakka Saralamma Medaram Jathara, touted as India's biggest tribal festival. The fair is celebrated once every two years.

The tribals not only make a visit to the fair from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh but from various states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

During the four-day festival, tens and thousands of tribals flock to the village to offer prayers to the tribal goddesses and now despite the Covid curve in the state having flattened, it becomes a matter of concern for the administration to make the visitors follow Covid protocols.
