India's Position In The AI Race
Previously, Altman, the visionary behind the widely recognized ChatGPT models, highlighted India’s significance in the global AI landscape. He emphasized that India is not only a key market but also the second largest for his company worldwide. According to him, the country has the potential to lead the AI revolution. "AI models are still not inexpensive, but they are achievable. India should undoubtedly be at the forefront," he remarked while addressing an audience.
He also expressed his admiration for how rapidly India has adopted artificial intelligence and fostered an extensive ecosystem around it. In line with this technological progress, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the recent Union Budget, announced the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to AI in the education sector. With an allocated budget of Rs 500 crore, this initiative aims to advance AI research and integrate it more effectively into the nation’s education system.
The new AI Centres of Excellence will work on advanced research, the development of AI learning tools, and foster collaboration between educational institutions and industries. The goal is to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in the future. The FM said, “AI is transforming industries worldwide, and India needs to lead in both AI research and its practical applications.”
India is expected to introduce its own secure and indigenous AI model within the next six months at a budget-friendly cost. Supported by an advanced common computing infrastructure, the IndiaAI mission is making significant strides toward developing AI solutions tailored specifically for the country, with a strong emphasis on incorporating Indian languages.
