'Zero Tolerance For Consumer Exploitation': CCPA Launches Probe Into Uber, Ola Over Alleged 'Differential Pricing' For Rides

The probe into Ola and Uber isn't an isolated effort. The CCPA is also examining complaints against other sectors, including online ticketing, food delivery, and e-commerce platforms.

UPDATE (January 24): In response to the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) action, Uber claimed that the company does not "set prices based on a rider's phone manufacturer."

"We look forward to working with the Central Consumer Protection Authority to clear up any misunderstanding," an Uber spokesperson said.

The original report follows:

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has launched an investigation into ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber over alleged "differential pricing" practices. Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi called these actions “unfair trade practices” and emphasized the need for transparency.

Joshi, addressing the issue on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stated, "Zero tolerance for consumer exploitation." He has directed the CCPA to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report promptly. The controversy emerged after a LinkedIn user flagged price discrepancies for the same Uber trip when booked on an Android phone versus an iPhone.

Uber, however, denied tailoring prices based on phone models. In a statement, the company clarified, “Hi there, multiple differences in these two rides impact the prices. The pick-up point, ETA, and drop-off point on these requests vary, which will cause different fares. Uber does not personalise trip pricing based on a rider’s cell phone manufacturer.”

CCPA Expands Investigation Beyond Ride-Hailing Apps

The probe into Ola and Uber isn't an isolated effort. The CCPA is also examining complaints against other sectors, including online ticketing, food delivery, and e-commerce platforms. In recent months, the authority took action against companies such as Blinkit, Zepto, Meesho, and Swiggy Instamart for allegedly violating rules under the Legal Metrology Act.

Despite these regulatory crackdowns, the quick commerce sector in India continues to thrive, drawing significant investor interest. The growing demand for ultra-fast deliveries has intensified competition among startups and e-commerce platforms, benefiting FMCG brands like Dabur and Hindustan Unilever by boosting their sales.

With consumer protection at the forefront, authorities aim to ensure transparency and fairness across industries, curbing practices that might exploit customers.
