Twitter Community Note Update: Users Will Now Get Handy Notifications For 'Extra Context'

Twitter Community Notes will allow users to add more context to tweets through links and reports.

Twitter has introduced a handy new update to its Community Notes feature. The microblogging platform has added a new alert for users when a tweet they've previously replied to, liked, or retweeted gets a note. Twitter Community Notes is a crowd-sourced fact-checking programme that helps users with the context of tweets.

On Wednesday, Twitter Community Notes announced, “Starting today, you’ll get a heads up if a Community Note starts showing on a Tweet you’ve replied to, Liked or Retweeted. This helps give people extra context that they might otherwise miss.”

Twitter chief Elon Musk has also lauded the update saying, “Community Notes is a game changer for combating wrong information.”

In 2021, Community Notes was initially made available to users in the US under the name "Birdwatch." Elon Musk changed the name of Twitter to "Community Notes" after the takeover. The crowd-sourced fact-checking programme is now open to contributors from four more countries. These countries include Ireland, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Twitter Community Notes intends to allow users to add more context to tweets through links and reports. The programme has been widely used to debunk or correct claims made in popular tweets.

By liking, retweeting, or responding to a tweet, you can make it more relevant to recommendation algorithms. For a while now, Twitter has been advertising its algorithmic feed. With this new update, if the context provided by a Community Notes contributor contradicts the initial position, people may remove their likes or retweets.

In November last year, Twitter rolled out an algorithm update that identifies more low-quality Community Notes, which will result in the suspension of contributor status for those who write unhelpful annotations to provide further clarification and context on tweets. The company said that those users will have to earn back their "contributor" status, as Musk promotes community-based moderation as the future of the company.
