India Surpasses Pakistan, Bangladesh To See Remarkable Surge In Mobile Download Speeds, Enters Top 50 in Ookla Speedtest Global Index

India has surged 72 places higher and now holds the 47th position in the Ookla Speedtest Global Index.

In a recent update on the Ookla Speedtest Global Index, India has made substantial strides in mobile download speed rankings, securing a position within the top 50. Ookla, a reputable company headquartered in Seattle, is renowned for its broadband and mobile network testing application, along with its comprehensive data and analysis services.

The Speedtest tool by Ookla is widely adopted by various entities such as internet service providers, carriers, businesses, universities, and government agencies. These stakeholders trust Ookla's dedication to maintaining quality and impartiality, as highlighted on the company's official website.

According to the latest report, India has surged an impressive 72 places higher and now holds the 47th position in the Speedtest Global Index. This remarkable feat is attributed to the recent launch of 5G services within the country.

India's ascent in the rankings surpasses neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Moreover, it positions India ahead of several G20 nations, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place), and South Africa (48th place).

The report further reveals that since the introduction of 5G, India's download speed performance has surged by 3.59 times. Median download speeds have notably improved from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022 to an impressive 50.21 Mbps in August 2023.

"This enhancement in download speeds propelled India's elevation in the Speedtest Global Index, propelling it from the 119th position to a commendable 47th position," stated the index.

The widespread deployment of 5G technology by leading operators like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has significantly augmented the number of 5G subscribers. Operators continue to pursue ambitious plans for rollout, entailing a substantial deployment of 5G base stations across the nation. The advent of 5G not only brings faster speeds but also elevates customer satisfaction levels, evident in the positive ratings received by network operators from 5G users in comparison to 4G users.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day address this year, announced the establishment of a task force dedicated to the development and implementation of 6G services, signalling a progressive leap in India's telecommunications landscape.
